Teaching phonics to preschoolers is such a vital part of reading development for young children. Having a tactile, visual game for them to use will be something that can slowly grow with their ability to recognise letters and spell words. These cups are so adaptable, simple and fun to put together and children will love the game of making up the words.

Start off with simple Phonemes, A-Z letters making simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant eg cat, hat, mat) words. Once kids have mastered the three letter words let them think of their own words to write on a blank cardboard with empty circles, which you can make for them.

When they have mastered these simple words you can move onto more complicated words which involve one or more digraphs (eg SHOOT.) Some common digraphs include bl, br, ch, ck, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gh, gl, gr, ng, ph, pl, pr, qu, sc, sh, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, th, tr, tw, wh, wr. Common vowel digraphs in English include ai (as in rain), ay (day), ea (teach), ea (bread), ea (break), ee (free), ei (eight), ey (key), ie (piece), oa (road), oo (book), oo (room), ow (slow), and ue (true).

This exercise will help children to recognize tricky words and combine phonemes to make more complicated sounding grapheme words with sounds like ai, igh, tch. It will help little ones make sense of how graphemes come together to make a sound.

Playing these word games will go far to help your children read and write as they head closer to primary school level.

In English the sounds in words (phonemes) are represented by different combinations of letters when we write them down. In other words, one sound can be represented by a number of different graphemes according to the word it appears in and different graphemes can represent more than one sound.

For example, in the words below, the letters 'ch' represent the /k/ sound in chemist, but the /sh/ sound in chef.

Let your kids call out the sounds so they get used to the combinations, then let them find the right paper cup to place over the letter. You can take it one step further and let them write down the word on a piece of paper. All in all you can have tons of fun with these letter boards without it being too challenging. HAVE FUN LEARNING!
